with a FLARE !!!

July 23, 2021

Our program presenter and sister of Johnny Tanner, Sally Macaulay and an array of interesting guests made for an exciting, informative meeting.  Alison Tanner, wife of Johnny Tanner and the woman who made him into the outstanding, manly man he is, joined us to hear Sally's presentation on the Marietta Chalkoberfest.  Marietta Kiwanian, Andy Gaines, was present to hear Sally, his fellow Marietta Kiwanian, present the program.

Brightening up the meeting was Katie Macaulay, oldest daughter of Hugh and Sally Macaulay.  Katie works in insurance sales for the Farmers' Insurance Company.  Most likely Katie is the inspiration for the Farmers' TV ad that announces:  {"We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two."  Come back to see us, Kalie!

Our own Tim Chapman, Superintendent of the Carrollton Center for the Arts, distributed a brochure reminding us all we have a fantastic arts center right here in town.

Other local dignitaries joined us:  Peter Debick, Carroll County Geographic Information Systems Manager and Planner; April Saunders, Marketing and Communications Director for the City of Carrollton; and Erica Studdard (AKA "Blue Eyes"), Carrollton Community Development Director.

Guests July 16, 2021

Tyler Paul Smith  -  Jack Whitman invited Georgia Representative Tyler Paul Smith (representing District 18).  A graduate of Bremen High School, the Citadel, and Atlanta's John Marshall Law School, Representative Smith informed us he considers one of his greatest accomplishments being invited to be part of Jack's pool shooting team.  Smith has a sense of humor; after Jack told him the Club Herald is a Democrat, Smith quipped:  "It's good knowing this is a bipartisan group."

Kiwanian Mike Renfrow, a UWG retiree who's been enjoying his retirement for years, joined us for lunch. It's always a treat to get to spend time with Mike.

Stephanie Cirasa  -  John Hinman did a yeoman's job of introducing our program:  Stephanie Cirasa, Director of the Waypoint Ranch, a program dedicated to helping veterans and their families heal from the consequences of their service to America.  She was accompanied by veterans Jay DeBaker and Tiffany Savage, who work with Stephanie in the program.

John Nino  -  Sponsored by Joe Tarshis, John Nino, Retired Army veteran (Military Police) was inducted into the club.  Thanks, John, for choosing our Kiwanis club.

Public Safety - Cooperating Agencies

Carroll Sheriff Terry Langley and Carrollton Police Chief Joel Richards presented the program for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Friday, June 25, 2021 with topic "the cooperation among various agencies for continued public safety".   The departments of police and sheriff must work together as it seems the bad guys don't observe political boundaries.
The program was the last regularly scheduled Kiwanis program held at Carrollton's Courtyard Marriott.

Linda Robles brought friend, Addie Weiss, as a guest.  Addie is a first grader who dreams of being a doctor so she can help others.  Let's keep in touch with Addie; she's surely destined to be a future Kiwanian.

Susan Smith, a prospective member and sister to new member Sandra Morris (who is current Rotarian of the Year) joined us to hear the great program by Chief Joel Richards and Sheriff Terry Langley.  Susan is the retired Associate Director of Ingram Library and presently also President of the Pilot Club of Haralson County.  Please come back, Susan to make Sandra Morris behave.

Joe Tarshis brought prospective member John Nino.  John "returned to have a second look."  He is an Army veteran who served in the Military Police and moved here from Arkansas with his wife.  Sounds like he was called here to become a Kiwanian.  Thanks for returning, John, for "a second look."

Member Sue Horn (publisher of the Star News) and Dan Minish (reporter for the Times-Georgian) also joined us to report on our Friday program.

Member and Sheriff's Deputy Greg Holcombe proudly announced he is engaged to a classy beauty, Christie.  Congratulations, Greg.  Are we invited to the wedding?

[ For the second year in a row, Greg was awarded the "golden spatula" for the extraordinary assistance lended to Federal Marshall Jeff May in the Kiwanis Cookout for the Council for the Aging Spring Fling 2021.]

Keep Stuart and Camille Yahm in your prayers.  Stuart is moving to Cottage Landing on July 1st, where he'll be in section 114-B.  We assume he'll still be telling great jokes.

Dr. Seuss' Birthday - Read on Tuesday, March 2.

Theodor Seuss Geisel's birthday is March 2, 1904.   The Carrollton Kiwanis Club will visit elementary schools and present books to selected children.   We are adjusting "the read" this year for social distancing and Covid-19.  Many members of the Kiwanis Club will be delivering books to the schools, but not reading in small groups, as has been the custom.  Volunteers should pick up books from Sit'n Sleep in Carrollton.  Contact Paul McDaniel if you have any questions.

My father passed away Saturday night after a 3 week battle of pneumonia.

We will be having a celebration of life party on Monday August 24th @ Venue on Cedar  809 Cedar Street in Carrollton from 1-4 pm.

I know he enjoyed every minute he spent with his Kiwanis family and we would love for members to come and celebrate his BIG life.  The event is a large space, so we will be able to follow all the current protocols.  If you would be so kind as to RSVP to this email address by Thursday August 20th so we can have a head count.

Chef Tano was my dads favorite guy, so know there will be good food and drink, just the way dad would want it.

Please share this with anyone who would wish to attend and share my email with them, I am trying to reach the people who would like to share their stories of my dad with our family.

If you would like to send flowers Venue on Cedar will be accepting them the same day as the celebration.

My mothers (Patricia) address is 105 Coolwater Trace Carrollton, 30117 if you wish to send flowers to her instead.

Food Drive in India

Dear Friends of South India Christian Mission,

As you may remember, we asked for your help with what started as a “Feeding the 4000” hungry, quarantined people in villages of South India.  As our preachers and leaders worked tirelessly in the bulk purchasing, packaging and distribution of food to village families, the need continued to grow.  So did your giving right here in the West Georgia area!  Bottom line: you helped us feed more than 6000 hungry people!  We just wanted to give yo

All our "exes" live in Texas

Congratulations to Dr. Amber Smallwood, who has accepted a new position and will be moving to Texas.   As Col. Frank Jones was famous for saying, "We're going to miss you !"

>>> snip, snip, snip >>>
copied from David Jenks; UWG

I write today regarding a transition in the College of Social Sciences Dean’s Office. Interim Dean Dr. Amber Smallwood has accepted an appointment as Assistant Vice Provost at the University of Texas-Arlington effective May 15, 2020. Amber has long been a member of the West Georgia family from her days as a child attending pre-K through her many roles as a faculty member and administrator. She has served the university in meaningful ways through the years, including recently in interim roles as Chair of the Department of Sociology and Dean of the College of Social Sciences. Amber also served a vital leadership role in helping West Georgia earn its national classification for community engagement from the Carnegie Foundation, becoming only one of 359 institutions to earn such a distinction.

Indeed, Amber’s professional commitment to community-engaged service will remain as a continuing legacy at West Georgia. I thank her on behalf of the university, the faculty, and the many students she has guided through a transformational educational experience. Amber, we wish you well.

Amber - Thank you for your contributions to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club !

If you want to fly in to the West Georgia Regional Airport every Friday, we'll get you a ride to lunch ?

Which way to the Beach  ?

This is an artist rendering of what Past-Georgia Kiwanian Lt. Governor and Foundation Trustee Dan Lewis will look like after the quarantine is lifted ?   Rumor has it that Dan and Penny have moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  When moving their stuff, they uncovered exercise equipment under piles of laundry.  Now, how to narrow down the identification of Penny in the drawing?  (credit goes to Tom and Jerry cartoon.)

Can you hear Col. Fran Jones' sarcasm when he said, "we will miss you"   ??

From the Kiwanis President

Posted by Cathy Farley on Mar 30, 2020
Hi everyone,

I hope this message finds you well.  I’m certainly missing your smiling faces and our meetings full of laughter!  Since we are unable to meet, I thought it might be nice to send in pictures of how we’re coping day to day by working from home or how you are ‘sheltering in place’.

Hopefully it can help us to feel more together by seeing each other’s faces & daily lives. We appreciate whatever you want to share. You can send a picture of a stocked pantry or a picture of you gardening or dancing!  Pictures of family! Some of us are actually teaching our children!
I’ve attached a picture of my  granddaughter Mey Mey.  She likes all things shiny.

Smile!  This Too Shall Pass.

Please submit photos by Monday of each week to Neil  Weathington to be included in Club Runner for that week. Neil has graciously agreed to assist.

Love and blessings to everyone,

Dr. Richard Ingle travels to India each year, usually to train teachers and preachers.

We agreed to quarantine him for the zoo.  He has COVID-19 and they don’t want it to spread to the other animals.  Lovely Indian Bengal.

I asked if it would spread to me. They said no chance. He’ll eat you first.

Georgia District art and Music Showcase

Posted by Neil Weathington on Mar 24, 2020
As with many events,  the State Art and Music Showcase has been postponed indefinitely.   "And the hits just keep on coming  !  "

Our music winner, pianist Justin Shin, notified that he has an injured finger and will not be able to play piano for the finals.

Is this déjà vu  ?   Just a few years ago, Justin's brother Albert was to represent the Carrollton Kiwanis Club in the State show, when he broke his arm.  (does playing Violin require two good arms?)

Enter our substitute candidate:  James Cullison, sophomore pianist attending Bremen High School. (should it ever re-open?)  James won second place in the Carrollton Music Showcase.

Wish James "Good Luck !"  as well as the four art entries.

State Art and Music Showcase will probably re-scheduled in the next century,  decade, season  ?  To Be Announced !

Good News :  I Yahm what I Yahm ?

Dearest Friends, I have good news to share this morning and could not wait to send it to you.   Tanner Hospital in Carrollton called just minutes ago to let me know that the results of the COVID-19 test given Stuart on Sunday came back negative!   He is still very sick, however, and we continue to wait for other test results for a diagnosis.  A home health nurse will arrive soon to assist me with some of Stuart's medical needs, for which I am grateful.

We and our family are grateful to each of you who have kept us in your prayers.  Be assured we have felt them during this critical time.  We will continue to follow the protocols set in  place by our doctors and scientists and will keep you posted as we discover the cause of Stuart's illness.

With loving thoughts of each of you,
Camille (and Stuart)

Dr. Bob Reeves - My Farewell Journey

Shock, despair, denial.  It was someone on the phone saying that dreaded word "CANCER."  My mind began to whirl.  "What about provisions for my family?"  "How soon?"  "Is it curable or not?"  "What comes next?"
Gradually the feared truth began otoset in.  How am I going to deal with this?  Prayer, comforting words and support from family and friends poured in.  My test of faith had begun.  Frankly, cancer had never been part of my thinking about my health.  Very little cancer has ever been in my family, and nothing in my direct line.  My concern had always been heart related diseases, which was a major factor in my personal decisions to be involved in a healthy cardio program lifestyle.
Healing was certainly part of my prayer, but how was I going to endure?  I had had the best of medical care and attentive family support.  What would I have done without my wife and daughter?  Finally I had to accept with my Christian faith to put my life into His hands.
I will miss the many fiends I have had the privilege to know over  a long career, and I hop they will remember me well, and forgive all the mistakes I've made.
Goodbye to my gym friends, former students, breakfast club, Sunday school class, Kiwanis Club, church staff (especially Ken and Gail Stephens), and my high school buddies who made a cross-county trip to give me their support and love.  And to all the people I've met in my life's journey.  Each person is a tiny candlelight guiding me along life's treacherous path.  This thought is from my favorite devotional, Candles on the Glacier, that uses the illustration that each of us is like a small candle crossing a rugged glacier in life.  It is my desire to present a positive face through this journey, and I hope my small candle of light will help others navigate their life's glacier.

Well, that needs to be re-worded and corrected.  He is not looking for a coach with special needs, although that might be an easy selection in Carrollton?

Delivering hot lunches to needy families

This is not a Kiwanis project, but it's right down our alley.

Every year, a combined community effort has been made to prepare hot Turkey meals and deliver to needy families on Thanksgiving.
Through a combination of donated food from various sources, Brad Cole Construction, Little Hawaiian and the Venue on Cedar, and an army of community volunteers, needy families identified through school counselors, hundreds of plates are delivered on Thanksgiving Day.

Forgive me if I omitted any of the guilty parties.

Here's a few photos that I snapped on Thanksgiving morning 2016.   Back then, volunteers assembled at the Tyus Road home of David and Andrea Walker . (David is associated with Brad Cole Construction.)

Left:  Derick Newton and ~ one+ year old Keziah.
Center:  The first year that Dr. and Mrs. Lok (UWG College of Science and Mathematics) helped in the assembly line, they improvised with solo cups to dip mashed potatoes.   In 2017, they came prepared with ice cream scoops.
Right:  In 2016, Ray Fulford pulled hot turkey meat from the bones.

This year, Tano is donating the use of the Venue on Cedar for food preparation and assembly on Thanksgiving morning.  If you are interested in helping, be at the Venue of Cedar at 8:30 AM on Thanksgiving morning.  If you are interested in delivery, arrive after 9:00 AM.  You will be provided with a list for delivery and directions.

Thanks from Georgia Carter

I was humbled and honored to receive the Henry Heinz medallion at the District Convention, but even more so because it was awarded by my own club.  It is my honor to serve our club at the District level, as I have done for a number of years, as chair of the District Showcase and as a trustee on the District Foundation Board.  As I am now in the rotation as president elect of the Foundation Board, it will continue to be my honor to serve and represent our amazing club at the District level.  I will do my utmost to fulfill the trust which has been placed in me and I hope I will make you all proud.
From the bottom of my heart I thank you and appreciate you.
Best regards to you all-Georgia

Congratulations Georgia Carter !

Georgia Carter was surprised when presented the Henry C. Heinz Award by her Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Saturday night at the Governor's Banquet.  Georgia has just completed her three year term as Trustee in the Georgia District Kiwanis Foundation, and has been selected to enter rotation as President-Elect of the Foundation.  The Heinz Award is the most appropriate way to honor her service for the Georgia District Kiwanis Foundation, as the money directly supports the Foundation.

Good Idea:  A Kiwanis Thrift Store

Fred and Anne came up to Asheville,NC this weekend and passed by a KIWANIS thrift store today in a nearby town. We stopped in of course, and learned that the group brought in $100,000 in 2018 that went to kids in the area. Their secret: virtually all employees are volunteers, including community folks who are not Kiwanians, because the group does so much good for children in the area.

Delivering the gift cards to Central and Carrollton High Schools.

In total, the club raised $1360 (!) this year to purchase small-denomination gift cards to restaurants (Subway, Chick-fil-A, etc.) to donate to local schoolchildren who may be experiencing food insecurity over the winter holiday break. The principals are working with school counselors and social workers to distribute the donations to those most in need this season.

New location:  The community effort to feed hot turkey lunches to the less privileged previously accomplished at the home of David and Andrea Walker has been moved this year to the Little Hawaiian's Venue on Cedar St in Carrollton Ga.
Food preparers should congregate at 7:00 AM on Thanksgiving morning.
