The Kiwanis Club of Carrollton had the pleasure of Daniel Jackson speaking to our club on September 8 at noon.

While Daniel’s contributions to our county are unprecedented, he continues to capture our minds and hearts with his polished, conversant, and humble manner.

Daniel reflected on the rich history of Kiwanis, referring to our collective  impact as giants in the community. Daniel then turned our attention across the globe to share amazing photographs of his trip to Africa to visit his daughter, son-in-law and three grands as they continue their meaningful missionary work.

Division 12 Club Leadership Education

Twenty leaders of six local Kiwanis clubs assembled in Carrollton at the Neva Lomason Memorial Library on Saturday morning of June 10, 2023.  The world of Kiwanis International is divided into forty-nine Districts, of which the State of Georgia is one District.   The Georgia District is divided into eighteen divisions, and the Carrollton Kiwanis Club and most others in attendance are members of the twelfth Division.  Brent Leslie, current Kiwanis Georgia Governor-Elect, has assigned the class of Lieutenant Governors Elect - the responsibility of organizing training sessions during the months of June and July - spread around the entire State, with the goal of making the training available to all Kiwanis leaders prior to taking office on October 1.

David Simmons, current Georgia Kiwanis Vice-Governor, (third in officer rotation) , visited from Cordele and conducted the training.  Attending this training helps position officers and clubs in attendance for qualifying for the coveted distinguished status.

The attendees enjoyed a lunch sponsored by Shane Davis of Best Bonding of Carroll County, Terry Langley of The Carroll County Sheriff's Office, and Jim Carter, of Sit'n Sleep, in Carrollton.

List of Things to Do :

Posted by Neil Weathington
1)  Please add to your next agenda for your Board of Officers and Directors, and approve  - the Division 12 Agreement.   Financing the Governor's Rally and some Division expenses are done through the coordination of clubs as goals spelled out in the agreement.   This is just a target.  In reality, many clubs already maintain a budget line-item each year that might, or might not, resemble the $ 3.00 per member contribution called for in the agreement.  'Tis the Season of approving budgets.  Remember that Article IV, Section 4 states: "The Council shall have no authority over the operation of any club in the Division."  Club Secretaries should report to Lt. Governor that the agreement has been approved.  Thank you!

2)  Schedule installation of Officers and Directors.   It will be my honor to visit your club and perform the installations.
Please contact Neil Weathington (e-mail) or telephone (770) 328-3168 to schedule September or early October meeting dates.
Thank you !

Background of SICM:  South India Christian Mission was started in 1994, initially as a personal and family "experiment" when its founder, Dr. Richard Ingle, decided to take a few young, dedicated Indian preachers under wing and encourage them in ministry.  The experiment proved hugely successful as evangelistic outreach in India, and later also in Sri Lanka, blossomed.

We enjoyed another eventful gathering of the best civic club in Georgia!

Opal Backstom  -  Dad Clint Backstrom and Grand Poppa Backstrom proudly showed off (daughter and granddaughter respectively) Opal Backstrom, who recently celebrated her first birthday.

We also celebrated the 93rd birthday of Ernest McClendon.  Attending with Ernest were wife Doris, daughter Rebecca, and granddaughter Samantha.  Rebecca, married with five children, was clearly happy getting to see her many friends in Carrollton.  Samantha, a high school senior, is an outstanding student who plays the trombone and guitar.

Jim Watters, City Council member, joined us for lunch. Next to him was one of our favorite Golden K members, Bob Uglum, who visits on a regular basis.  Looks like he wants to also join our club!

Lynn Weathington  - Neil Weathington invited wife, Lynn, to share a lunch date.  Lynn is an author who recently published Summer Solstice, a contemporary re-telling of Jesus' parable of the prodigal.  Rebecca helped edit the book.

[  Neil's shameless advertisement:  Go to Amazon and order the book.  While supplies last.  HA!]

Bobby Sanders  -  Jeremy Sabo brought prospective member Bobby Sanders.  A huge Georgia Bulldog fan, Bobby is a retired banker and alum of the University of West Georgia (then West Georgia College?).  Married to Carole, he's joyfully proud of his three amazing granddaughters.  He has a million dollar smile, suggesting he was born to be a member of our club!

Kathy Parsons, founder of Impact West Georgia, a non-profit serving the homeless and others in need in our community, has submitted her membership application.  On behalf of our club, President Johnny Tanner, along with members Lacey Robinson and Robert Graf, presented a check to Kathy to support her programs.

Sara Claudia Ministries

Sara Claudia Cain provided a very inspirational program for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Friday, January 20, 2023 in UWG's Hubbard Dining Room.  Oxygen deprivation to the optic nerve during what would have been a routine tonsil surgery left her totally blind in both eyes also deaf in one ear.

Sara has proven herself to be a phenomenal overcomer after waking up from surgery with no eyesight.   She has written three books, completed a University degree,  speaks on a radio show, and married, and proves that nothing is impossible with God's help.

Battling Food Insecurity

[Hi All,

We've collected around $900 towards the food gift cards for the benefit of Central and Carrollton High Schools.

We'll continue to collect through December 2nd. If members are unable to attend the next meeting and give cash, they can be billed (please let us know an amount) or use the club venmo account. Contact Clint cbackstr@westga.edu or Jenny jingram@westga.edu

Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away. We would like to invite Kiwanians to think ahead to the upcoming Christmas break for our Carroll County and City Schools. Some of you may know that our county has a very high number of families without the funds to provide enough food for their families. When school is in session, many families are blessed to know their children will have enough healthy food for breakfast & lunch thanks to the free and reduced lunch programs. However, when longer breaks occur families often do not have the means to provide healthy meals or meals at all.

Kiwanis wants to be part of the solution as we’ve done for the last several years. We are asking for donations of $10 gift cards or cash that will be turned into gift cards to local fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A and other such restaurants. We can also add an amount to your quarterly bill if you don’t have cash with you or will miss the meeting on Friday. These donations will then be disbursed to students via their guidance counselor’s office. We will be sponsoring Central & Carrollton High Schools in December.

Please donate all funds, gift cards or pledges to Clint Backstrom or Jenny Ingram no later than December 2nd. Contact info is below if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your giving hearts!

Clint & Jenny

October 1:  Begin AND end your day in Kiwanis Service  !!!

Posted by Mark Herring on Sep 29, 2022
Good Morning Kiwanians

I hope all is well with everyone !  It looks like Rain is not going to be as big an issue for us as initially thought SO it’s a Kiwanis Call to Serve this weekend, October 1st.  Like United Community Bank in the banking industry…the Carrollton Kiwanis Club is a club that service built.  For 75 years now, we are know in the community as a club that gets things done.  Well we have to raise money to support the programs we are involved with and we have 2 opportunities this weekend to show our community what a great club we have.  We have our Bob Reeves Memorial 5k Race, Saturday morning.  There will be 257 middle school runners for our 3k and over 100 runners for the 5k.

And then there is Homecoming that evening for our 5th ranked University of West Georgia Wolves.  I know we are ALL busy and tired BUT we need your help.  I know it’s a struggle to get up early or stay up late but I also know once we get there we have FUN and enjoy our time of service.  If you can help with the race we need you there by 6:30 at Hobbs Farm on Rome Street.  If you need to sleep in a little Saturday morning we could use you at 4:00 for the concessions at UWG.  The concession stand is a lot easier than in times past.  The more Kiwanians we have the more FUN we have.
There are not too many times we ask you to serve since we no longer have the Kiwanis Bowl BUT this weekend is a major day of Service.  Let us know if we can count on you for the race or the concessions or both.

Thanks for your time…you are making a difference in our community.

Mark

Chase the Victory Foundation

Posted on Aug 12, 2022

Kiki McDaniel (left) accepted a $600 contribution from Dale Williams, president of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club, to benefit the “Chase the Victory Foundation” in memory of her late son, Chase McDaniel. Kiwanis Club President Dale Williams made the presentation at Friday’s club meeting.

Kiwanis Club makes $600 contribution to "Chase the Victory Foundation"

  • live it everyday,” Kiki McDaniel said, “but the results of his memory and his foundation live on in the lives of those who benefit from

it, and it helps keep our family going.”

She cited the importance of the retreats for families who have lost a child to cancer.

“No one knows what it like until they go through it, so the retreats are a place where parents and family members can share their grief, learn how to cope, and help each other,” Kiki McDaniel explained.

When Chase was undergoing treatments and spending two months in the hospital fighting cancer, there were many visits from an array of people, especially from Carrollton.

“This town is a very, very special place,” she said.

As an example of the community’s giving spirit, McDaniel cited the recent nonprofit “Sneaker Ball” held last week at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta which raised approximately $150,000 for the foundation that funds the purchase of sneakers and the cost of the family retreats.

The event featured live music, dinner and a silent auction of sports memorabilia and featured guests including Freddie the Falcon and Atlanta Falcons’ cheerleaders.

“We had an anonymous donor just recently give us a check for $5,000 that will pay for 10 families to attend one of our retreats where they can find comfort, peace, understanding, and hope,” she said.

Following the completion of her remarks, McDaniel was presented a contribution of $600 from Kiwanis President Dale Williams to help continue Chase’s legacy.

Thanks to Dan Minish, Times-Georgian

Dr. Brendan Kelly spoke to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on August 5, 2022 in UWG's Hubbard Dining Room.   The University of West Georgia is very unique compared to similar institutions, and  has been proactive in embedding several programs to meet the needs of the community - such as Nexus (computer) training and the joint venture with Tanner Medical System to provide nurses to help combat the shortage of workers in the medical field.  The University Leadership has been keeping a close eye on the demographics of the current student population and is continually analyzing needs in the job markets - to better equip the students for careers.

Ferst Readers / Ferst Foundation

Karen Wild and Nancy Smith visited and provided the program for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on July 22, 2022 in the Hubbard Dining Room.  The Ferst Readers Organization represents childhood reading and literacy.  The Kiwanis Foundation supports Ferst Readers with a donation.

Stand-out take-a ways:  If you support literacy why can't you spell "first".  Answer:  It is named from the last name of the founder.  Robin Ferst founded the foundation in 1999.  History

"Children learn to read in the first three grades.  From the third grade and on, children read to learn."

Club Dues

Due to the rising cost of food and the increased cost of catered meals, the board of officers and directors has been forced to increase the per-meal calculation to $ 16.00 per meal in the next quarter billing.  Thank you for your understanding.  A few members are enjoying the "full membership" billing status;  continuation at the current price is not sustainable and options are currently under board study for a full membership that is sustainable and provides advantages for members.  To quote Milton Friedman, "there is no free lunch."

Partners Advancing Student Success

Posted by Fred Richards
February 25, 2022
Our Club was inspired by an uplifting program on PASS (Partners Advancing Student Success) presented by Hannah Langley Yates and Jennifer Cheely.  As if filled by the spirit, members broke out in spontaneous applause and an occasional "Amen."  I felt I was at a revival and President Dale Williams or someone would be moved to pass the plate and take up an offering for PASS.   It was a great meeting, one that could only happen in the best civic club in Georgia!

Katheryn Grams  -  John Hinman brought wife, Kathryn Grams.  While John whispered into Kathryn's left ear tender declarations of love, I reminded fellow-Kiwanians that, in addition to being a past Dean of the UWG School of Nursing, Kathryn remains active in numerous organizations serving the community.

Bruce Guthrie  -  Managing Editor of the Times--Georgian, also joined us.  We greatly appreciate the interest and support of representatives of the media.

Ryan Dahlberg  -  While water poured into Z-6 at UWG, President Dale Williams and troubleshooter Neil Weathington went into alert mode and informed the membership to meet at Bakery 27/LittleHawaiian for today's meeting.  We shared a mouth-watering meal, devoured delicious desserts, and listened to an excellent program by Dr. Julie Post from the West Georgia Technical College. Accompanying Dr. Post was W.G.T.C. Director of IT, Ryan Dahlberg.  Ryan, relatively new to the area, lives in Haralson County.  He is married and has two daughters and was excited about attending the Daddy-Daughter Dance later today.

Bill Erickson presented an excellent, meaningful program about the death of his uncle, William Melville, in 1943 and his internment 78 years later.  His uncle's love of flying moved him to sign up to learn to fly during World War II and, before his 21st birthday, he was shot down and died over the jungles of New Guinea.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger spoke to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on January 7, 2022 in the Z6 Food Service Building on the Campus of the University of West Georgia.

The Secretary's Office covers many functions of State Government, however election security and trust dominated the talk, as the US Presidential Election of 2020 has been the main media focus for the last year.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's talk appears to have inspired a lot of romance among the members.  Four members each invited a spouse and made the event a date.
Fran Robinson  -  Lacey Robinson invited wife, Fran.  Fran is a UWG graduate and the former co-owner of West Georgia Travel and now uses her talent, skills, and caring to assist and support several charitable organizations.
Sue Tarshis  -  Joe Tarshis arrived with wife, Sue, who happily describes herself as a dedicated, professional grandmother.  The Tarshis family is getting ready to celebrate Joe's 70th birthday.
Hazel Nino  -  John Nino brought wife, Hazel.  John proudly talked about Hazel's artistic creativity; she is a weaver and a fabric artist.
Beth Graf  -  Robert Graf arrived with wife Beth.  Beth is a retired nurse who also holds a Masters Degree in Psychology from UWG.  She's dedicated to integrating Psychology and Spirituality in everyday life.
Susan Welch  -  Jenny Ingram shared lunch with prospective member, Susan Welch.  Susan, who is being sponsored by Jenny, is Professor and Associate  Dean in the UWG School of Nursing.  She's submitted her application!
Dr. Kelly and Russell Crutchfield  -  We were joined by two guests of the club:  Dr. Brendan Kelly, current UWG President, and his Chief of Staff, Russell Crutchfield.  Perhaps someone warned them about my introductions because I couldn't locate them when I welcomed them to the Club!
Bob Uglum, Past President of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, visited to pump us up about the upcoming Pancake Breakfast, an event we will be helping to make happen in February.

Media  -  We appreciate the representatives of the media who covered Raffensperger's talk.  As always, thanks!

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger
Brad Raffensperger

The guest speaker for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on January 7 will be Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

The meeting will be held in the large area behind the brick wall that you may have noticed as in the past you have entered the Hubbard Dining Room.

Meals have been ordered for members and guests who registered on-line (see bottom of this e-mail),
and for those who registered manually with Jenny at the last in-person meeting.  (you know who you are...)

Ordering meals has been tricky for this meeting.  The University is not yet open and a specific count had to be confirmed for attendees.  Kiwanis is the only customer of the day.
