Sara Claudia Cain provided a very inspirational program for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Friday, January 20, 2023 in UWG's Hubbard Dining Room.  Oxygen deprivation to the optic nerve during what would have been a routine tonsil surgery left her totally blind in both eyes also deaf in one ear.

Sara has proven herself to be a phenomenal overcomer after waking up from surgery with no eyesight.   She has written three books, completed a University degree,  speaks on a radio show, and married, and proves that nothing is impossible with God's help.

No luck for Jim Carter.  As Richard Dixon took his winning from the raffle pot, Jim had the worst of odds drawing from a new deck with 53 cards including only one Joker.

Fifty Two Cards remain for the next drawing in January.

Cumulative total is only what Joe collected Friday, less the $10 paid out to the weekly raffle reporter.

Unconfirmed; $ 33 - $ 10 = $ 23 waiting on next winner.

Battling Food Insecurity

[Hi All,

We've collected around $900 towards the food gift cards for the benefit of Central and Carrollton High Schools.

We'll continue to collect through December 2nd. If members are unable to attend the next meeting and give cash, they can be billed (please let us know an amount) or use the club venmo account. Contact Clint cbackstr@westga.edu or Jenny jingram@westga.edu

Thanksgiving is less than three weeks away. We would like to invite Kiwanians to think ahead to the upcoming Christmas break for our Carroll County and City Schools. Some of you may know that our county has a very high number of families without the funds to provide enough food for their families. When school is in session, many families are blessed to know their children will have enough healthy food for breakfast & lunch thanks to the free and reduced lunch programs. However, when longer breaks occur families often do not have the means to provide healthy meals or meals at all.

Kiwanis wants to be part of the solution as we’ve done for the last several years. We are asking for donations of $10 gift cards or cash that will be turned into gift cards to local fast food restaurants such as McDonalds, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A and other such restaurants. We can also add an amount to your quarterly bill if you don’t have cash with you or will miss the meeting on Friday. These donations will then be disbursed to students via their guidance counselor’s office. We will be sponsoring Central & Carrollton High Schools in December.

Please donate all funds, gift cards or pledges to Clint Backstrom or Jenny Ingram no later than December 2nd. Contact info is below if you have any questions.

Thank you all for your giving hearts!

Clint & Jenny

October 1:  Begin AND end your day in Kiwanis Service  !!!

Posted by Mark Herring on Sep 29, 2022
Good Morning Kiwanians

I hope all is well with everyone !  It looks like Rain is not going to be as big an issue for us as initially thought SO it’s a Kiwanis Call to Serve this weekend, October 1st.  Like United Community Bank in the banking industry…the Carrollton Kiwanis Club is a club that service built.  For 75 years now, we are know in the community as a club that gets things done.  Well we have to raise money to support the programs we are involved with and we have 2 opportunities this weekend to show our community what a great club we have.  We have our Bob Reeves Memorial 5k Race, Saturday morning.  There will be 257 middle school runners for our 3k and over 100 runners for the 5k.

And then there is Homecoming that evening for our 5th ranked University of West Georgia Wolves.  I know we are ALL busy and tired BUT we need your help.  I know it’s a struggle to get up early or stay up late but I also know once we get there we have FUN and enjoy our time of service.  If you can help with the race we need you there by 6:30 at Hobbs Farm on Rome Street.  If you need to sleep in a little Saturday morning we could use you at 4:00 for the concessions at UWG.  The concession stand is a lot easier than in times past.  The more Kiwanians we have the more FUN we have.
There are not too many times we ask you to serve since we no longer have the Kiwanis Bowl BUT this weekend is a major day of Service.  Let us know if we can count on you for the race or the concessions or both.

Thanks for your time…you are making a difference in our community.

Mark

Chase the Victory Foundation

Posted on Aug 12, 2022

Kiki McDaniel (left) accepted a $600 contribution from Dale Williams, president of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club, to benefit the “Chase the Victory Foundation” in memory of her late son, Chase McDaniel. Kiwanis Club President Dale Williams made the presentation at Friday’s club meeting.

Kiwanis Club makes $600 contribution to "Chase the Victory Foundation"

  • live it everyday,” Kiki McDaniel said, “but the results of his memory and his foundation live on in the lives of those who benefit from

it, and it helps keep our family going.”

She cited the importance of the retreats for families who have lost a child to cancer.

“No one knows what it like until they go through it, so the retreats are a place where parents and family members can share their grief, learn how to cope, and help each other,” Kiki McDaniel explained.

When Chase was undergoing treatments and spending two months in the hospital fighting cancer, there were many visits from an array of people, especially from Carrollton.

“This town is a very, very special place,” she said.

As an example of the community’s giving spirit, McDaniel cited the recent nonprofit “Sneaker Ball” held last week at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta which raised approximately $150,000 for the foundation that funds the purchase of sneakers and the cost of the family retreats.

The event featured live music, dinner and a silent auction of sports memorabilia and featured guests including Freddie the Falcon and Atlanta Falcons’ cheerleaders.

“We had an anonymous donor just recently give us a check for $5,000 that will pay for 10 families to attend one of our retreats where they can find comfort, peace, understanding, and hope,” she said.

Following the completion of her remarks, McDaniel was presented a contribution of $600 from Kiwanis President Dale Williams to help continue Chase’s legacy.

Thanks to Dan Minish, Times-Georgian

Dr. Brendan Kelly - UWG President

Dr. Brendan Kelly spoke to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on August 5, 2022 in UWG's Hubbard Dining Room.   The University of West Georgia is very unique compared to similar institutions, and  has been proactive in embedding several programs to meet the needs of the community - such as Nexus (computer) training and the joint venture with Tanner Medical System to provide nurses to help combat the shortage of workers in the medical field.  The University Leadership has been keeping a close eye on the demographics of the current student population and is continually analyzing needs in the job markets - to better equip the students for careers.

Ferst Readers / Ferst Foundation

Karen Wild and Nancy Smith visited and provided the program for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on July 22, 2022 in the Hubbard Dining Room.  The Ferst Readers Organization represents childhood reading and literacy.  The Kiwanis Foundation supports Ferst Readers with a donation.

Stand-out take-a ways:  If you support literacy why can't you spell "first".  Answer:  It is named from the last name of the founder.  Robin Ferst founded the foundation in 1999.  History

"Children learn to read in the first three grades.  From the third grade and on, children read to learn."

Club Dues

Due to the rising cost of food and the increased cost of catered meals, the board of officers and directors has been forced to increase the per-meal calculation to $ 16.00 per meal in the next quarter billing.  Thank you for your understanding.  A few members are enjoying the "full membership" billing status;  continuation at the current price is not sustainable and options are currently under board study for a full membership that is sustainable and provides advantages for members.  To quote Milton Friedman, "there is no free lunch."

Partners Advancing Student Success

February 25, 2022
Our Club was inspired by an uplifting program on PASS (Partners Advancing Student Success) presented by Hannah Langley Yates and Jennifer Cheely.  As if filled by the spirit, members broke out in spontaneous applause and an occasional "Amen."  I felt I was at a revival and President Dale Williams or someone would be moved to pass the plate and take up an offering for PASS.   It was a great meeting, one that could only happen in the best civic club in Georgia!

Bill Erickson presented an excellent, meaningful program about the death of his uncle, William Melville, in 1943 and his internment 78 years later.  His uncle's love of flying moved him to sign up to learn to fly during World War II and, before his 21st birthday, he was shot down and died over the jungles of New Guinea.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger's talk appears to have inspired a lot of romance among the members.  Four members each invited a spouse and made the event a date.
Fran Robinson  -  Lacey Robinson invited wife, Fran.  Fran is a UWG graduate and the former co-owner of West Georgia Travel and now uses her talent, skills, and caring to assist and support several charitable organizations.
Sue Tarshis  -  Joe Tarshis arrived with wife, Sue, who happily describes herself as a dedicated, professional grandmother.  The Tarshis family is getting ready to celebrate Joe's 70th birthday.
Hazel Nino  -  John Nino brought wife, Hazel.  John proudly talked about Hazel's artistic creativity; she is a weaver and a fabric artist.
Beth Graf  -  Robert Graf arrived with wife Beth.  Beth is a retired nurse who also holds a Masters Degree in Psychology from UWG.  She's dedicated to integrating Psychology and Spirituality in everyday life.
Susan Welch  -  Jenny Ingram shared lunch with prospective member, Susan Welch.  Susan, who is being sponsored by Jenny, is Professor and Associate  Dean in the UWG School of Nursing.  She's submitted her application!
Dr. Kelly and Russell Crutchfield  -  We were joined by two guests of the club:  Dr. Brendan Kelly, current UWG President, and his Chief of Staff, Russell Crutchfield.  Perhaps someone warned them about my introductions because I couldn't locate them when I welcomed them to the Club!
Bob Uglum, Past President of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, visited to pump us up about the upcoming Pancake Breakfast, an event we will be helping to make happen in February.

Media  -  We appreciate the representatives of the media who covered Raffensperger's talk.  As always, thanks!

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger
Brad Raffensperger

The guest speaker for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on January 7 will be Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

The meeting will be held in the large area behind the brick wall that you may have noticed as in the past you have entered the Hubbard Dining Room.

Meals have been ordered for members and guests who registered on-line (see bottom of this e-mail),
and for those who registered manually with Jenny at the last in-person meeting.  (you know who you are...)

Ordering meals has been tricky for this meeting.  The University is not yet open and a specific count had to be confirmed for attendees.  Kiwanis is the only customer of the day.

Kiwanis Shut-ins

Good News!

A good report on Bob Myers.  When he went in for coronary catheterization, he was upgraded to open heart surgery - after one artery showed 95 percent blockage and another artery showed 100 percent blockage.   Now he is recovering and is able to walk around the house and talk on the telephone.  He is not allowed to ride in the front seat of any car with airbags and will cautiously miss the next few Kiwanis in-person meetings to avoid any infectious danger.
All-in-all a good report.

Suart Yahm has been in improved condition and has been able to escape the bounds of Laurel Glen .  He has been seen dining out at The Venue on Cedar while celebrating Camille's birthday (December 28).  Thanks to Fred and Anne Richards for this update report on Stuart and Camille.   Perhaps we need to purchase a chauffer's hat for Anne in appreciation for the driving service.

Bowling Green - Disaster Relief

Many Kiwanians have inquired as to how to help the victims in the wake of tornados in Bowling Green Kentucky.

One way to help is through support of the Samaritan's Purse organization, whose Disaster Relief team left a successful track record after the recent tornado damage in Newnan Georgia.

The US Disaster Relief team mobilized quickly and has boots on the ground in Kentucky.    Individual donations to organizations like Samaritan's Purse can be the most effective way to help.

Go to Samaritan's Purse to donate !

Guests November 19, 2021
Bob Uglum  -   esteemed member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club, visited to hear an excellent program by the Honorable Mayor, Betty Cason.  Bob also shared some thoughts about our club's helping with the famous Pancake Breakfast this coming February (Wow:  Bob said "only ten weeks ahead?").
David Lambert  -  Melanie Lambert arrived with husband David.  Melanie and David were married by Betty Cason seventeen years ago when Betty served as Probate Court Judge.  It's always a joy to have the honeymoon couple sharing lunch with us.
Joe and Judy Dixon   -  Richard Dixon invited brother Joe and his wife Judy Wilson Dixon.  A successful businessman, Joe was founder and owner of Joe's Tools.  A manly man, Joe ran with the high school relay team (including our own Jim Carter) that set a record in Georgia.  Judy, retired from West Georgia Tech, after teaching English as a Second Language.  She and Betty Cason have been lifelong friends.  Joe and Judy have two daughters and two grand-daughters.

Our meeting was informative and full of the spirit of camaraderie and mutual affection characteristic of our club.  There was also the heavy weight of sorrow as we opened our hearts to the tragic news of past-President Angie McDaniel's father dying in a car accident.  Paul and Angie are beloved members of the club. We will keep them sheltered in our hearts and pray for them and the family - and for Angie's mother as she slowly recovers in the hospital.

Every dollar helps, and we can even place it on your quarterly bill.

Once in a Lifetime Concert

Posted by Taylor Buice on Nov 11, 2021
Hello Everyone:

On November 11, 2021 I am putting on a "once in a lifetime" concert to
benefit the WALLACE BUICE THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP, that is given to one
high school senior each year who has decided to pursue their
collegiate career in the Fine Arts.

I have an abundance of star talent coming to perform at the Carroll
County Performing Arts Center. We will have 5 of  the most talented
Atlanta performers,  5 Broadway performers, and will be featuring the
most sought after Mezzo-Soprano in the opera world, Jamie Barton.

We also have our 2019 recipient Anna Lowry (NYU-TISH), 2021 recipient
Taya Taylor (Medical Music Therapy), and Carrolltonian Blair Lipham
(Vanderbilt Vocal Performance) performing as well.
  Terry Lowry will
be Musical Directing and leading the 12-piece orchestra that will be
playing for our performers (including myself - coming out of
retirement).

I would appreciate you forwarding this to any "arts lover" that you
might know, and I hope that each of you and your spouses, family and
friends will want to attend as well.

I am also looking for someone to sponsor the program for a 100% tax
deduction (if you might know anyone interested).  Their name or
business will be displayed above the title of the show and will be
seen by thousands all over GA, including our social media platforms
(10,000 hits), posters around Carrollton and Atlanta, name on our 8x8
step and repeat banner, and VIP tickets to the event.

This is going to be an amazing night for our community and for our
local high school students.

Below is a link to the tickets, and I have attached our marketing poster.

Thank you all,

Coach Joey King

Kiwanis President Clint Backstrom and Coach Joey King.

Coach Joey King, head Football Coach at Carrollton High School,  spoke to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on the Friday (August 13) of his team's first scrimmage game against Rockmart.

From AJC:

Joey King, the coach who led Cartersville to two state football titles with quarterback Trevor Lawrence, is taking the head coaching job at Carrollton, returning to Georgia after two years in the college ranks.  King was Cartersville’s head coach for five seasons, and his teams won region titles in each of them. He was the fastest in state history to reach 50 wins, in 52 games.  King, a 2001 Cedartown graduate, was on Carrollton’s staff from 2008 to 2013, coaching quarterbacks and running the offenses, under Rayvan Teague before becoming a head coach for the first time at Cartersville. Carrollton reached the state finals in 2010 and 2013 when King was on staff.

July 23, 2021

Our program presenter and sister of Johnny Tanner, Sally Macaulay and an array of interesting guests made for an exciting, informative meeting.  Alison Tanner, wife of Johnny Tanner and the woman who made him into the outstanding, manly man he is, joined us to hear Sally's presentation on the Marietta Chalkoberfest.  Marietta Kiwanian, Andy Gaines, was present to hear Sally, his fellow Marietta Kiwanian, present the program.

Brightening up the meeting was Katie Macaulay, oldest daughter of Hugh and Sally Macaulay.  Katie works in insurance sales for the Farmers' Insurance Company.  Most likely Katie is the inspiration for the Farmers' TV ad that announces:  {"We know a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two."  Come back to see us, Kalie!

Our own Tim Chapman, Superintendent of the Carrollton Center for the Arts, distributed a brochure reminding us all we have a fantastic arts center right here in town.

Other local dignitaries joined us:  Peter Debick, Carroll County Geographic Information Systems Manager and Planner; April Saunders, Marketing and Communications Director for the City of Carrollton; and Erica Studdard (AKA "Blue Eyes"), Carrollton Community Development Director.

Every pair of shoes that we give away is an opportunity to share the message of hope and encourage a kid to live life in victory, regardless of what they may be facing. Guests May 14, 2021

Bill Bailey and Chris Criswell  -    We were witness to a memorable, festive event when the entire club bellowed out a Happy Birthday tune to celebrate the birthday of Louise (Lulu) Reeves, member extraordinaire and superstar athlete.  Lulu was flanked on either side by Coach Chris Criswell and Coach Bill Bailey, the three constituting a trinity of well-known stars of the Georgia sports scene.  Chris, confessing he is a better judge than a cook and brother of our outstanding program presenter, retired Coach Tim Criswell, is a veteran World Championship Chili Judge and has served nine times as a judge at the internationally known chili challenge in Terlingua, Texas.  Bill Bailey, now a real estate agent, announced he is now available to help us buy or sell a home.  [Bill Bailey has submitted his membership application !]

Stuart Lewis  -  Milton Berry invited guest and hopefully prospective member, Fred Lewis, a person as terrific as his first name!  A retired coach and teacher, he is also the proud dad of Stuart Lewis, a retired coach/teacher who has been in Carrollton since 1981.  Fred Lewis has the spirit and soul of a Kiwanian.  Milton, bring him back to us!  Bill Bailey and Tim Criswell are also considering joining the club.  It was a great meeting!
