New location:  The community effort to feed hot turkey lunches to the less privileged previously accomplished at the home of David and Andrea Walker has been moved this year to the Little Hawaiian's Venue on Cedar St in Carrollton Ga.
Food preparers should congregate at 7:00 AM on Thanksgiving morning.

As you may have heard, the UWG football team won their game Saturday and will now host West Florida this coming Saturday, November 25th.

Kickoff is at 1:00pm so we would need 2 volunteers to arrive at the Stadium at 10:00am to verify inventory counts. The rest of the group would need to arrive by 11:00am so we are ready to serve at 11:30am when the gates open.

Please let me know ASAP if anyone is in town and available to serve. If I do not hear enough response by Tomorrow at (Tuesday) at 5pm, I will have to let the University know that we are not able to man this one.

Thank you all for all you do and sorry for the late notice!

Angie McDaniel

President of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club

The Moon's umbral (darkest) shadow will cross the continental United States on August 21, 2017, creating a coast-to-coast total solar eclipse visible to millions. This is one celestial event that people will be talking about for years to come.  Carroll County will be in the path of the partial eclipse, and UWG is providing safety glasses to observe the eclipse to every student in the County thanks to a grant awarded.

Dr. Powell narrated a slide show to the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Friday, June 30, 2017 at Sunset Hills County Club.  Dr. Powell will travel to South Carolina to study the effects of the total eclipse.

The new Carroll County 911 Center and Emergency management center opened its doors for tour and lunch for the Carrollton Kiwanis Club on Friday, March 17.
Trish Orr spoke to the club on 911 operations (club members asked about the most stupid calls handled by the center) and Tim Padgett elaborated on the room used for emergency briefings.   Lunch was provided by Josh McCorsley.

Bob Reeves invited all to the Irish Pub to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and absolutely none of these events had anything to do with the anniversary celebration or Dan and Penny Lewis which occurs every March 17.

So you're the absent minded Kiwanian and you walk into the Sunset Hills Country Club , only to find the room empty and you're the only one in attendance.  You double check your calender - confirming that the day is Friday - and faithfully eliminate the possibility that the rapture has left you behind - then you remember --

Kiwanis is meeting at the new E911 Center - behind the Ag Center.

Lunch and a tour.

Knowing Dr. Marrero, Leader of the Wolf Pack, would be here to deliver a presentation, I was moved by the Muse to write some words to honor the occasion:

In a loincloth or a kilt,
or in a cap and gown,
He's the life of the party,
the Toast of the Town !

Need scholarship money ?
Call on Marrero.
For he just loves
asking for and getting that dinero.

Kyle's playful and naughty,
a cure for our chagrin.
He can surely charm an audience,
with his cheshire cat grin.

He's a singer on stage,
Not just in the shower.
Also known to shatter glass
with his operatic power.

Jane says Kyle's perfect
in his boyish, imperfect way.
She's loved him since he proposed,
dressed as a cop, sing YMCA.

But I say Kyle's not perfect
He's committed one great sin.
He didn't join our Kiwanis Club
When we invited him in.

Still, he's here with us now.
Let's forgive him and with open arms,
Welcome him to move and inspire us,
With his message and his charm.

Go West !  Go Wolves !

Good morning everyone,

I’m proud to share with you that I will be running the Marine Corps Marathon October 30th, in support of the Semper Fi Fund Charity. The Semper Fi Fund provides immediate financial assistance and lifetime support to post 9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families, ensuring that they have the resources they need during their recovery and transition back to their communities.

If you are interested in supporting this great charity and helping me hit my fundraising goal, please visit https://runsignup.com/runningwithapurpose or share it with your friends who might be interested in running as well. I greatly appreciate any and all assistance you would be able to provide.

P.S. For those interested, the goal is 3:45!

Respectfully,

Cody

Obituary - Dave Dugan ( 1929 - 2016 ) 2016-06-13 00:00:00Z 0
Posted by Dr. Robert Claxton on Jun 12, 2016
Remembering Dave Dugan (1929-2016)

Dave Dugan served as President of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club during the 1997-1998 term. He was the only past president to have remained a part of the club when his son, Mike, became club President in 2012.

A former Athletic Director at the University of West Georgia (1990-1994), he had been the first person the Georgia to receive a doctorate in recreation and parks management.

One memorable program when he was Kiwanis President was that arranged by Allen Trapp.
A number of Brazilian young people who were descendants of Confederate exiles visited the club. In addition to Kiwanis Bowl, the club sponsored a car show when Dave was President.
Jack Bennet’s idea of distributing books to at-risk children became a state-wide priority and “Dr. Seuss Reading Day” began its evolution. The elimination of iodine deficiency disease became a new priority. The Carrollton Club co-sponsored a new club in Villa Rica.

Dave Dugan subsequently was inducted into the Georgia Power Hall of Fame for his lifetime of contributions to recreation. In 2004, the Carrollton Club named him a Hixson Fellow.

The TIMES-GEORGIAN today announced the passing of Laurence Smith due to cancer.

He was President of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club during the 1989-1990 term.

See pages 144-148 of the club history for details of his time in office. It almost seems like a past "golden era"
with very distinguished speakers, multiple fund-raisers, and around 140 members!

While Kiwanis is not a political organization and we do not endorse candidates, it is important to know when Kiwanians are running for office.

Homebuilder becomes second candidate for District 5 seat

Arthia Nixon / Times-Georgian / February 20

Lowell custom homebuilder Dale Williams will run for the Carroll County District 5 commissioner seat in the 2016 Republican Primary.

Williams becomes the second candidate to announce for the seat currently occupied by Kevin Jackson, who said he will not be seeking re-election. Earlier this month, Whitesburg cattle farmer and general contractor Jeffery Lee Powers said he is running for the position.

Williams said he would like to see the district balance its rural and incorporated areas. He said he is also concerned about the lack of consistent tech services such as high-speed Internet, which many students and business people in the area rely on. Properly marking the “potentially dangerous country” roads is something he’d also like to see done in the area.

Good afternoon to all of Allen's friends, associates and co-workers who have supported my Mom and I thru the last few days the same way you all supported Allen over the last 25 plus years. It has indeed been a trying time for us and more trying times ahead but we will get thru the hand that has been dealt to us. Once again thank all of you so much for your friendship to Allen over the years and support to my Mom and I in the past few days.
