Remembering Dave Dugan (1929-2016)

Dave Dugan served as President of the Carrollton Kiwanis Club during the 1997-1998 term. He was the only past president to have remained a part of the club when his son, Mike, became club President in 2012.

A former Athletic Director at the University of West Georgia (1990-1994), he had been the first person the Georgia to receive a doctorate in recreation and parks management.

One memorable program when he was Kiwanis President was that arranged by Allen Trapp.
A number of Brazilian young people who were descendants of Confederate exiles visited the club. In addition to Kiwanis Bowl, the club sponsored a car show when Dave was President.
Jack Bennet’s idea of distributing books to at-risk children became a state-wide priority and “Dr. Seuss Reading Day” began its evolution. The elimination of iodine deficiency disease became a new priority. The Carrollton Club co-sponsored a new club in Villa Rica.

Dave Dugan subsequently was inducted into the Georgia Power Hall of Fame for his lifetime of contributions to recreation. In 2004, the Carrollton Club named him a Hixson Fellow.
