Kiwanian Suzanne Durham welcomes Police Officers Matt Kenerly and Brandon Podaras.  (not shown:  Max)

[ President's note:  "At almost every meeting we have asked members to silence cell phones prior to the program, and I have noticed a few members making cell phone adjustments.   When warned that the police dog would react to a cell phone, almost everyone in the room immediately checked phones and set for silence.  It was serious business for everyone.  It was amazing how fast everyone went for the cell phone." ]

Matt Kenerly explained and demonstrated the use of Max, his police partner, in searches and chases, and other police work.  For the demonstration, a drug sample was taped to the bottom of a chair [ Fred's ] before Max entered the room, and all the Kiwanians were moved to safety to the other side of the room.  Max quickly alerted to the location of the substance.   Max had great strength and many members showed concern that he would overpower Officer Kenerly who was holding the leash.    Safety concern was increased when it was told that Max had removed the entire calf muscle from a recent running perpetrator.  The meeting was eventually ended so that everyone could return to work, but many stayed and asked questions of the officers.

Something to look forward to:   The afternoon schedule called for Officer Podaras to wear a "bite" suit and continue training Max.
