Bob Townley, the founder of Carrollton Kiwanis Bowl, passed away on November 29. In its early days, Kiwanis Bowl was a major morale-builder for a demoralized club. When Bob became club president in October 1976, the organization was in the red; that situation was turned around by the following July. Back dues could be paid in installments,; Kiwanians cut, split, and sold firewood; sometimes a hat was passed at meetings to raise funds,; club members organized a basketball team that played to make money; for the first time, the treasurer’s records were computerized.

Weekly programs were never dull in those days: Dr. Jack Birge on combating high blood pressure, General John Beall on his World War II experiences, “Boom Boom” Geoffrion on the Atlanta Hockey Flames, Guy Sharpe on TV weather forecasting, and a young woman who worked her way through college as a stripper! Anyone who ever witnessed Bob’s own “Wild West Show” about famous gun-slingers never forgot it.

Major community service emphasis in Bob’s year was on safeguarding against crime. During 1976-1977, the club added seventeen new members, including Leroy Childs, later the club’s first African-American president. Carrollton led all similarly-sized clubs in inter-club activity in the district and sponsored a new club in Tallapoosa.

In short, Bob Townley set an example of a very effective club president. But his leadership did not stop there. He was also division lieutenant-governor for the 1979-1980 year.
